How it's calculated

ANC = WBC count × (% neutrophils + % bands) / 100, giving the absolute number of mature and immature neutrophils available to fight infection.

Interpretation

ANC (cells/µL)Interpretation
< 500Severe neutropenia — high infection risk
500 – 999Moderate neutropenia
1000 – 1499Mild neutropenia

Frequently asked questions

What is the ANC used for?

It quantifies the number of neutrophils available to fight infection, used to assess infection risk, particularly in patients undergoing chemotherapy.

What ANC defines febrile neutropenia?

Generally an ANC below 500 cells/µL (or below 1000 and expected to fall further) combined with fever defines febrile neutropenia, a medical emergency.

Does ANC include band forms?

Yes — the calculation includes both segmented (mature) neutrophils and band (immature) forms from the differential.

Why does ANC matter in chemotherapy patients?

It is used to time chemotherapy cycles, decide on growth factor support, and assess the urgency of any fever or suspected infection.
