How the IV drip rate is calculated

For gravity-fed (non-pump) infusions, the drip rate converts a target volume and duration into drops per minute, using the giving set's drop factor.

Clinical use

This calculation is used for manually-regulated gravity infusions when an electronic infusion pump isn't available or isn't required. Always confirm the actual drop factor printed on the specific giving set in use — it is not universal — and recheck the rate periodically, since gravity infusions drift with patient position and IV site.
