How it's calculated

The ponderal index formula is: PI = (weight in grams × 100) ÷ (length in cm)³. Unlike BMI, which uses height squared, the ponderal index formula uses length cubed — making it less sensitive to a newborn's body proportions and a better discriminator of "thinness" at birth than weight-for-length alone.
